The original house was designed and built in 1962 by Grace LaRose, an unusually artistic, courageous, and determined woman. Grace was drawn to her time’s International Design Movement from Germany with its more open, functional, flexible, and minimalistic floor plans and expansive view windows interconnecting interior and exterior spaces that became so popular throughout the world. She aligned and recessed her daylit concrete basement into the site’s slopes to maximize her access, view, and sunshine. With its 4’ overhangs, central stair, and custom fireplace, it’s one of the Northwest’s earliest earth sheltered passively solar heated and cooled houses.
